Addendum to the Infinite

Perhaps, when it comes to an unchanging virtual world, loss of meaning is not the consequence: loss of story is. After all, RPGs were always supposed to be about telling a story. Most MMORPGs are like Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian pushing that millstone around for the entire movie. The hero gets stronger, the seasons change, but it's still only a story about pushing the millstone.

I'm part of the problem. EvE Online is has a changing universe, one of player-forged alliances and economics, but I'm afraid to play it. I just know I'll get PK'd and lose a lot of work, inconvenienced by the very forces of change I said I want.

My CoH subscription is about to expire, and I'm wondering where to go next.
  1. I never liked World of Warcraft. Artificial looking, simple game mechanics, and it just doesn't take itself seriously. Great for the casual, but not for the distinguished gamer.
  2. EverQuest 2 and Final Fantasy XI are excellent for different reasons but both have over-expanded. This makes finding players hard and all that abandoned content is just depressing.
  3. Lord of the Rings Online and Tabula Rasa are still patching in important core functionality. It's hard to enjoy an unfinished game.
Even discarding this whole changing world idea, I'm a tough crowd. I want to play a deep (read: not overly dumbed down) MMORPG, a MMORPG that has yet to over-expand, but a sufficiently finished MMORPG. If I can't come up with a solution, I may well end up playing City of Heroes again (or none at all).

I find it rather odd that you feel that World of Warcraft is an example of a 'dumbed down' MMO, when you feel that City of Heroes is not.

I started playing both WoW and CoH when they came out (with friends). CoH won the subscription at that time (for both my friends and myself).

After about 2 years of CoH (we cancelled in December 2007), we made the leap to WoW. We felt that CoH was lacking in depth. While that lack of depth was what made CoH great (no loot, no crafting, just combat), we felt it was time to look for a little more in our gaming experience. Which for now, WoW is providing.

Just my 2 cents, but like I said, I needed to comment because I feel that CoH is the 'dumbed down' version of an MMO as compared to WoW. Not that that is a bad thing. CoH, to me, is a combat game, and it does combat very well. I always liked that CoH had zero loot and zero crafting. (I don't count enhancements or inspirations to be loot, nor do I count the new recipe system in CoH as crafting.)

We just decided collectively that we would switch to WoW for now. I don't regret it. The quests in WoW are much more enjoyable than the missions in CoH, which to us just felt like wash, rinse and repeat.
Well, I should backpedal a bit - World of Warcraft might strike me as being [i]simple[/i] but there's certainly a lot more shallow games out there than it.

What bothers me most about WoW is it is, at the heart of things, not all that different from the original EverQuest I grew bored of long ago. Blizzard did add some nice GUI implications that spiced things up a bit - such as Warrior Rage bars and the Rogue Combo system - but it's still just EverQuest.

Coming from a background of having mostly only played City of Heroes and World of Warcraft, it could be reason why you find WoW to be so interesting is because you've yet to burn out on it like so many EverQuest players had before.

These days, City of Heroes has added both loot and crafting, it might be worth another shot to see how you feel about it in comparison to WoW.

Empyrion Vrs Space Engineers: A Different Kind Of Space Race

In my quest for more compelling virtual worlds, I have been watching Empyrion: Galactic Survival a lot this bizarro weekend, mostly via the Angry Joe Show twitch stream.  What I have concluded from my observations is Empyrion is following in Space Engineers' shadow, but it is nevertheless threatening the elder game due to a greater feature set (the modding scene notwithstanding).

Empyrion is made in Unity, whereas Space Engineers is built on a custom engine.  While this does put Empyrion at a disadvantage when it comes to conceptual flexibility, its developers nevertheless have a substantial advantage when it comes to adding features due to a savings of time spent that would have gone into developing their own engine.  Examples include:
Planets.  Empyrion already has planets and space to explore between them, whereas in Space Engineers planets are in the works but still awhile away (so you just have asteroid fields to scavenge).Enemies.  Space Engineers' survival mode boasts onl…

Greasing The Grind: Adding Lasting Appeal To Virtual World Sandboxes

Game design, being about entertainment, is not as much science as art.  We're coming up with interesting things that the human mind likes to chew on that "taste" good to it.  Different people find different things, "Fun," and a game designer is tasked with coming up with fun, appealing things.  As pertains to virtual world sandboxes, I identified three of them.

Challenge Appeal.

Dwarf Fortress and Fortresscraft Evolved have the same end game appeal preservation mechanic: wealth equals threat.  The more money your Dwarf Fortress is worth, the bigger the baddies who will come for you, including a bunch of snobby useless nobles who do nothing but push dwarves around and eat.  The more energy you make in Fortresscraft Evolved, the more and bigger bugs come to shut down your base.  Rimworld does something a little different based off of which AI Storyteller you choose, but it generally adds time to your wealth accumulation when deciding what kind of threats to throw a…
